Description: a dark viscous paste.
Active Ingredients: 1 g contains Calcium hydroxide 30.8%, Sodium hydroxide 29.9%
Mechanism of Action: horn keratin hydrolysis by young animals.
Why Dehorn: the productivity of a dehorned cattle herd being increased by 10% is evidence-based.
That is due to the fact that nutrient and, particularly, mineral substances, previously used for horns formation, now being redirected to other vital body functions, including productivity increase (gain, milk yield).
Dehorned cattle are vividly calmer and more restful, which means less stressful situations and, therefore, affects much the productivity.
Injuries and concomitant diseases like wounds of the vulva and udder, hemorrhage, etc. are reduced significantly by dehorned cattle, unlike by the horned, when kept loose, especially in summer.
Dehorned cattle is safer for the staff.
Dehorning calves with a paste is more humane, as young animals almost do not feel pain, so the process goes quickly and easy.
How to Dehorn:
The paste is used on calves, lambs and kids up to eight (8) weeks of age, by applying the paste to a spot over horn button, the weigh no more than 1-2 g.
The best period is between the 3rd and the 8th day of age. An animal should be tied, hair over the horn button removed, the button line determined with Vaseline or udder cream. Apply a thin film of the Paste with a small wood applicator to a spot over horn button and adjoining skin the size of 20 mm in diameter.
For animals over 1 week of age the diameter should be of 25 mm.
To dehorn calves, 6 to 8 weeks old, where horn button has started to grow, remove hair and roughen a ring 10 mm wide around base of horn where it joins the skin, with a small scraper or file (do not draw blood). Apply a thin film of the paste over horn button and a thicker one over roughened ring around horn button.
Warning:
After the paste applied, sucking animals to be kept separately for 30 minutes, in order to avoid the udder injury. Keep animals out of water after the paste has been applied.
